چکیده

New mid-infrared (10 and 20 μm) spectro-photometry of the ultraluminous infrared galaxy IRAS 08572+3915 is presented. The 10 μm spectrum reveals a deep silicate absorption feature, while the 20 μm spectrum shows no clear evidence for an 18 μm silicate absorption feature. An interstellar extinction curve is fitted to IRAS 08572+3915 and two other deep silicate infrared galaxies, NGC 4418 and Arp 220. It is found that pure extinction cannot explain the spectral energy distributions of these sources. On the other hand, both the strength of the silicate absorption and the overall spectral energy distributions of the three galaxies agree well with scaled-up models of galactic protostars. From this agreement, we conclude that the infrared emission comes from an optically thick dust shell surrounding a compact power source. The size of the power source is constrained to be smaller than a few parsecs. We argue that a significant portion of the total luminosities of these galaxies arises from an active galactic nucleus deeply embedded in dust. Deep Mid-Infrared Silicate Absorption as a Diagnostic of Obscuring Geometry toward Galactic Nuclei

The silicate cross section peak near 10μm produces emission and absorption features in the spectra of dusty galactic nuclei observed with the Spitzer Space Telescope. Especially in ultraluminous infrared galaxies, the observed absorption feature can be extremely deep, as IRAS 08572+3915 illustrates. A foreground screen of obscuration cannot reproduce this observed feature, even at large optical...

The Interstellar Medium of Iras

We confirm the first detection of themolecular ionH3 in an extragalactic object, the highly obscured ultraluminous galaxy IRAS 08572+3915 NW.We also have detected absorption lines of the fundamental band of CO in this galaxy. The CO absorption consists of a cold component close to the systemic velocity and warm, highly blueshifted and redshifted components. The warm blueshifted component is rem...

Observations of Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies with the IRS on Spitzer

We present spectra taken with the Infrared Spectrograph on Spitzer covering the 5−38μm region of the ten Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs) found in the IRAS Bright Galaxy Sample. Among the BGS ULIRGs, we find a factor of 50 spread in the spectral slope from 5.5−60μm in the rest frame. There is evidence for water ice and hydrocarbon absorption (from 5.5−6.5μm) in 7/10 BGS ULIRGs, as well ...

We find extremely compact structures, with spatial scales of < 0.3 ′′ (diameter) in six of the seven ULIRGs observed. These compact sources emit between 30% and 100% of the mid-infrared ...
